December 2012

Beloved Bay Area chef and cooking teacher Joanne Weir comes to lunch on Friday, 14 December 2012 at noon as we celebrate the publication of her new book, Joanne Weir’s Cooking Confidence: Dinner Made Simple. Tickets (including lunch) are $15. Please join us for this special event.

Sisters Paris and Liberty Morris will be here on Saturday, 15 December 2012 at 3 PM to sign their new book, My Twins’ First Christmas. Please join us.

January 2013

We are delighted to be working with the Lafayette Library Foundation on an afternoon event with Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild, on Sunday, 6 January 2013 at 2 PM. This event will take place at Acalanes High School in Lafayette. General admission tickets are $35.

Bestselling English novelist Jojo Moyes joins us at lunchtime on Friday, 11 January 2013 at Noon as we celebrate the publication of her new novel, Me Before You. Julie loved her first novel, Last Letter from Your Lover, so it’s a thrill to have her visit us here at Rakestraw Books.

Danville’s own Veronica Rossi returns to Rakestraw Books to celebrate the publication of her second novel, Through the Ever Night. It’s been so exciting watching Veronica’s writing career take off. We couldn’t be happier for her. Please help us celebrate Book Two with her!

Celebrated children’s author-illustrator (Sibert Medal, Coretta Scott King Award for Authors, Caldecott Honor, Coretta Scott King Award for Illustrators) Kadir Nelson visits on Tuesday, 15 January 2013 at 10 AM to discuss his beautiful new book, I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. Please call for more information.

Our good friend Erica Bauermeister returns to Rakestraw Books to share her new novel, The Lost Art of Mixing (a follow-up to the beloved bestseller, The School of Essential Ingredients) on Friday, 25 January 2013 at 7 PM.

February 2013

It is our honor to present an evening with the Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani as they present their new book, Beyond the Change: 50 Years of Creating Radical Change at a Community Called Glide, on Tuesday, 12 February 2013 at 7 PM. This event will take place at the Danville Congregational Church at 989 San Ramon Valley Boulevard. More information to follow.

Bestselling writer John Wood visits on Thursday, 21 February 2013 in the morning to discuss his new book, Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy. While this event will take place at The Athenian School at 2100 Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard in Danville, it is open to the public by reservation. Susan Shillinglaw, professor of English and director of the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University, joins us on Tuesday, 26 February 2013 at 7 PM to discuss the new edition of the Penguin classic, The Portable Steinbeck. As February 27 is Steinbeck’s birthday, we’ll be serving cake!

Our good friend Sophie Littlefield returns to Rakestraw Books on Thursday, 28 February 2013 at 7 PM as we celebrate the publication of her new novel, Garden of Stones.

March 2013

We are beyond excited to announce an evening with Joyce Carol Oates on Friday, 15 March 2013 at 7 PM. She will be discussing her work and, particularly, a new novel, The Accursed. Reservations will be essential. Watch for details.

April 2013

One of the hits of this past year was Jenny Lawson’s weird and marvelous and hysterically funny debut collection of essays, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir). Now, with the addition of some new material, this terrific book is out in paperback and Jenny Lawson is coming to Rakestraw Books (woohoo!) on Tuesday, 2 April 2013 at 7 PM.

We are delighted to be working with the Lafayette Library Foundation on an afternoon event with renowned mystery writer Alexander McCall Smith on Sunday, 14 April 2013 at 7 PM. Details to follow.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Elizabeth Strout returns to Rakestraw on Wednesday, 17 April 2013 at 7 PM as we celebrate the publication of her new novel, The Burgess Boys. Details to follow.

One of our all-time favorite novelists, Elinor Lipman, returns on Friday, 19 April 2013 at 7 PM with two new books, The View from Penthouse B: A Novel, and a collection of essays, I Can’t Complain: (All Too) Personal Essays. Details to follow.
