Bergin University of Canine Studies Gala

October 4, 2013 @ 6:00 pm

$55.00

Bergin University of Canine Studies is proud to announce a premier Gala and Book Signing featuring  New York Times bestselling author former Army Captain Luis Carlos Montalván and his service dog, Tuesday at the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley on October 4, 2013. We are hosting this fundraiser to further our mission of providing service dogs for people with disabilities including Veterans as well as preparing students to become future leaders in the field of service dog training and placement, the related dog industry and academic canine studies.

Captain Montalván is a highly decorated combat veteran who returned from multiple tours in Iraq with physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His book, Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him, is the moving story of the power of the human-canine bond in recovery and spiritual renewal for man and dog. Luis is now a tireless advocate for service dogs for wounded warriors- veterans with physical and psychiatric disabilities and others with disabilities. Multifaceted and sometimes controversial, Captain Montalván is an engaging speaker with an inspiring story. Bergin University of Canine Studies is proud to bring him to The Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley to share his story and further our mission of helping dogs help people.

Meet Luis and Tuesday on October 4, 2013 at a fundraiser benefiting the Bergin University of Canine Studies’ many programs. The Bergin University Gala will be a festive evening beginning at 6:00 PM with wine tasting from local vineyards, light fare and a silent auction. The program will commence at 7:00 PM with a welcome from Dr. Bonita Bergin who originated the Service Dog concept, founded the first Service Dog Program and serves as President and CEO of Bergin University, followed by a service dog demonstration by Bergin University students. Captain Montalván and Tuesday will then take the stage for the keynote presentation. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Captain Montalván and Tuesday, purchase a copy of his book for signing and have a photo opportunity with them. All proceeds from the event will support Bergin University’s mission to provide service dogs to those who need them.

Service dogs assist their human partners in many ways including; retrieving objects, providing balance support, alerting to seizures, anxiety attacks, allergens, and low blood sugar, and performing numerous other tasks. There are few limits to the ways in which service dogs can offer loving, supportive, practical, companionable — and often lifesaving — assistance.

Service dogs perform a vast and growing range of tasks that assist thousands of people in meeting the everyday challenges presented by their disabilities. In his book, Luis describes the life-changing impact of his service dog, Tuesday.

Tickets for the event can be purchased through MyCommunityTickets: http://bit.ly/12Xzmvo or by contacting Bergin U by phone or email [email protected]. Tickets cost $55 per person. If you are unable to attend, you may donate funds to support the event and sponsor attendance for somebody in need.
