DESCRIPTION:
Violinist Juliana Athayde, a Lafayette native and the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (New York), comes home to join the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra. Athayde will perform Mozart’s spectacular Sinfonia Concertante (for violin and viola), with Pamela Freund-Striplen, violist and Artistic Director of the Gold Coast Chamber Players.
The work is part of the CCCO’s power house season premier, It Takes Two. Works by Tchaikovsky round out the program: the dramatically evocative Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, and the Second Symphony, nicknamed the “Little Russian” for the composer’s use of stirring, ebullient Ukranian folk songs.
Long-time educator and conductor Timothy Smith will introduce each piece with fascinating insights into the composers’ lives and work.
