The 12th Annual Tiburon International Film Festival

The 12th Annual Tiburon International Film Festival, a showcase for the independent films from around the world, is set for April 11-19, 2013.

Tiburon International Film Festival (TIFF) is a nine-day annual event, showcasing the best in global cinema. Via Magazine has recognized the Tiburon International Film Festival as “A True United Nations of Cinema.”  TIFF was established in 2001, and over the past eleven years has showcased over 2,000 films from more than 100 countries.

The festival motto, Understanding the World through Film® is derived from the combination of culture and cinema as a means to greater worldly understanding.

This year, the films are presented from 30 countries, including: Japan, Columbia, USA, Cuba, France, Italy, Germany, Yemen, Spain, Turkey, India, Switzerland…

The opening film, The Empty Home, from Kyrgyzstan (Russia), is a well-paced production about a girl on a country road in Kyrgyzstan, who goes through many challenges to reach her goal.

The festival popular local program, Marin Filmmakers, will present Running for Jim, directed by Dan Noyes [anchor and Chief Investigative Reporter for ABC 7 News in San Francisco] and Robin Hauser Reynolds. The film chronicles the story of Jim Tracy, the most decorated high school cross-country coach in California history.

And Past Their Prime, directed by Becca Friedman, about animals and humans who have a lot in common when faced with mortality and aging.

The festival, for the first time, will also present Films on Youth, a collection of films made by or about the youth with their coming of age, social class, growing up, sexuality….and challenges that they face in today’s global society around the world.

The festival, as usual, takes a look at the current events that is taking place around the world and shaping our lives, with such films as The Reluctant Revolutionary, about the  revolution that ignited Arab Spring in Yemen….Saigon ’68, the story of underlying the most influential and electrifying photograph to come out of the Vietnam War….The Siege, about thirty five heavily armed members of the cavalier M-19 guerilla movement storming the Palace of Justice in Columbia….Santiago is Santiago, a look at the music and people of Cuba today…
