Veterans and their families are invited to attend the 2015 edition of “VetCon,” a one-day showcase of resources, job opportunities and direct assistance for veterans, held every other year in Contra Costa County.
VetCon will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015, at the Concord Hilton Hotel, 1970 Diamond Blvd., in Concord, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. “VetCon is the premier event for veterans, similar in style to ComicCon, bringing veterans together through their unique and shared experiences and need for support,” said Contra Costa Veterans Service Officer Nathan Johnson. “Veterans, service members and their families will all walk away with something of value, and new friendships and connections as well.”
VetCon provides a “one-stop-shop” for veterans, active duty military and their families to access benefits counselors, employers and job search assistance, and a wide array of services from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Child care will be provided to keep the kids busy with a free children’s corner. Throughout the day, a blood drive will also be taking place.
More than 500 veterans attended the successful 2013 VetCon. Based upon feedback from them, this year’s event will have expanded services and programs for attendees. New this year are two showcase events: a live broadcast of the monthly cable TV talk show “Veterans’ Voices,” at 11:30 a.m., and a Town Hall meeting featuring U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System Director David Stockwell beginning at 1:00 p.m. The resource fair and information booths open at 9:00 a.m., but you can join with other veterans.
No pre-registration for VetCon is required, though access to counselors and health care personnel from the VA and County Veterans Service Office will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For veterans desiring benefits counseling, it is recommended, but not required, that they bring a copy of their DD-214. The event, including parking, is free.
